Wake up!! To the Hazards of Emplyee Fatigue

Bob McClay, MBA, CSP
Session Description:
The role of fatigue in the causation of accidents has not been thoroughly explored but it is a virtual certainty that it is a factor in many cases. This session will address employee fitness for duty and the physiological processes that create the condition we know as "fatigue". Operational causes for fatigue will be discussed. Performance decrements will be explained in order to show how fatigued employees experience difficulty in carrying out familiar tasks with a high degree of precision.
During accident investigations, fatigue needs to be considered as a causation factor.
Symptoms of fatigue will be described so that employers can detect when employees are experiencing the effects of fatigue. Various wake-sleep cycles will be analyzed to show how each contributes to the onset of fatigue and the design of Fatigue Management Programs will address shift work and steps that should be taken to reduce the hazards associated with fatigue.
