Reducing Motor Vehicle Risks Factors through Effective Management Controls

Stephen Bock, M.S.
Session Description:
Work-related motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause (or 42%) of on-the-job deaths in the United States. This plays a significant role with most companies in that safety controls need to be implemented and enforced due to the level of risk associated with a serious accident occurring or even death. In 2006, there were approximately 42,642 automobile accidents, which equals out to approximately 117 deaths a day. Approximately 50 percent of occupants killed in passenger vehicles were not wearing safety belts. Employers need to be educated on risks associated with drivers being behind the wheel and what controls they can implement to help reduce or eliminate those risks.
This presentation will cover the following topic:
· The latest national statistics related to drivers of motor vehicles.
· Aggressive driving, characteristics of an aggressive driver, and how to protect oneself when confronted by such a driver.
· Distracted driving and common distractions that occur with today's drivers.
· Risks associated with cell phones and the importance of requiring drivers to wear seat belts.
· Essential elements of an effective driver safety program and how to evaluate an existing program.
Throughout the presentation, there will be a series of trivia questions to entertain the participants, along with a short video clips outlining distracted driving.
