Do you have to be an engineer to be a member of ASSE?
In a word-No. Maybe in 1916 when the society was formed but not any longer. Our members come from all kinds of educational backgrounds. You just have to be involved in safety, health and/or environmental protection as a profession.
Can non-members attend local meetings?
This is up to the local chapter to determine but to the best of my knowledge all our chapters welcome visitors to their chapter meetings. Use the links on the Home page to go to your local chapter's website for more information and contacts.

I don't have a lot of time, but I would like to get involved somehow. What kinds of things could I do?
Contact your Chapter leadership. If you don't know who that is, visit your Chapter's website. A link to the Chapters is provided on this website. Each Chapter has many activities where your involvement could be as simple as making suggestions for meeting location or topics or writing an article for the newsletter. It could also be as complex as having the desire to take a Committee Chair position or run for a Chapter office. "How can I help?" will start the process. The Chapters are full of volunteers, and it is through volunteering with your Chapter that you will see how much is given but also how much you gain from the experience.
What is the Region and how do they work differently than the Chapters?
The Region is made up of 15 Chapters. For Region VI, Chapters are from Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The Chapters are unified under the Regional Vice President. The Regional Vice President communicates to and from the Society on behalf of the members and Chapter Leaders.
Can I join a Chapter of my choice?
As a member of ASSE, your membership dues automatically include dues for a Chapter. If it would be more convenient for you to be in a different Chapter than one they have assigned, then it is easy to make the change.
1. Email customerservice@asse.org
You must provide your FULL NAME and MEMBER NUMBER, then just list the chapter you want to join. You will receive an email confirmation upon completion.
2. Call Customer Service - 847-699-2929 (8:30 to 5:00 CST)
Does the Region hold meetings and activities like my Chapter?
Each September the Region VI hosts a Professional Development Conference (PDC). This conference is held in Myrtle Beach, SC. It has been called "The Biggest Little Conference" and it is 3 days of great speakers and well worth the price of registration. In addition to the Conference, the Region is set up so that each Chapter can communicate meetings and activities that other Chapters' member might also share in.
